The Y tending
Elle Woods’ graduation speech deserves its own spotlight, because in less than two minutes, she encapsulates the exact energy of staying true to yourself, even when no one sees the vision but you. It’s soft yet grounded, simple yet profound, and perfectly embodies the journey of becoming. As she stands before her class, she says:
“On our very first day at Harvard, a very wise professor quoted Aristotle: ‘The law is reason free from passion.’ Well, no offense to Aristotle, but in my three years at Harvard, I’ve come to find that passion is a key ingredient to the study and practice of law — and of life.It is with passion, courage of conviction, and strong sense of self that we take our next steps into the world. Remembering that first impressions are not always correct, you must always have faith in people. And most importantly, you must always have faith in yourself. Congratulations, class of 2004 — we did it!”
It’s a reminder that passion is not a distraction from success—it’s the very frequency that fuels it.
It’s easy to get inspired by the classics.
Last night was The Devil Wears Prada.
Today?
Legally Blonde.
And I swear—I’m definitely seeing my insides reflected in a Blond.
I wonder how I’d look.
Maybe that’s a creation for another day.
For now, we write the blog post surrounding her character.
Because Elle Woods—
She is a masterclass in what it means to live in your own world, unphased by the current of water, but still willing to follow it, knowing it’ll lead somewhere, eventually.
No matter who we are, what our mission is, or how disregarded our present may seem…
there’s something sacred about someone who keeps showing up exactly as they are.
Yes, desires can get confusing sometimes.
Yes, wanting more than what was ever on the table might seem excessive.
But maybe—just maybe—it’s because we dared to want more
that the table became abundant.
In the quest for “more,”
when the hoax of “more” finally shatters,
the real opportunity rises.
And it was exactly at her graduation speech—
fully immersed in a mirror fractal of myself—
that I checked the time: 11:44pm.
Probably going to go back and watch the ending.
But I wanted us to fill in the gaps from the garden of our minds.
And as a welcoming into my home, know this:
it is one of a kind.
You can’t copy this.
You can’t embody the source of what I create—
because you didn’t live my story.
But you can recognize the truth of why it was created:
it was made for you,
by the hands of the Universe,
and this time, those hands just happened to be mine.
✦ The Ludicrous Looks Like Us
It doesn’t matter how ludicrous what you do looks like.
I keep catching myself thinking,
“Wow, what they’re doing looks ridiculous,”
while realizing…
someone else probably thinks the same of me.
That’s the full-circle lens of integration.
We all look absurd to someone, for something.
So how can we look at someone like Elle Woods in her becoming
and still appreciate her without needing to see her win her case first?
Why must we go through the doubt to see the genius?
And was it the doubt itself that channelled the win?
Was it her quiet belief that she could do anything,
even while feeling afraid,
that aligned her with victory?
She lives in her own universe,
whether she’s crying over spilled milk
or building the empire of her destiny on the same day.
And I want that. I am that. So take that.
✦ How to Build a Space for Artists to Stay Free
How can I create a space where the artists walking through our doors
feel fully supported—whether they’re learning their first chord,
or mastering Prince’s riffs?
How do I build their self-confidence through contrast,
so they learn to trust their own sound,
their own dome,
their own mind?
By showing them how I trust mine.
I want 4Honeth to be a place where you:
- discover,
- nurture,
- and master.
Yourself.
Your process.
Your perception.
Because it’s not about what happens out there—
it’s about what you were made to create.
What drives you?
If it’s to prove yourself—good.
If it’s because you believe you’re the greatest of all time—perfect.
If it’s because you want to change the whole world—amazing.
Let. Them. Be. That.
✦ The Pain of Late Praise
People aren’t slow at reaching their greatness—
they’re just slowly recognized.
And those who tend to achieve great things
go through great trials.
They get doubted.
Dismissed.
Unseen.
Then, when the victory comes—
suddenly it’s all,
“I always knew you’d make it!”
“I always believed in you.”
That’s cute.
But also—
a little insulting.
Because where was that courage
when it mattered most? When the boost mattered. Not that it was ever needed, clearly they were alwasy going to make it, but what about hte opportunity for someone to extedn that possibility when they were still developing? Heartfully, not conceiveably? So many faces I’ve seen and seen go by, not because I was too hard to catch, but because they were too set to stretch towards me.
See I could always stretch myself in their own worlds, that’s how I developed such variety in me, but when it came o stretching towards this part of our Consciousness, it was too hard, too difficult to comprehend, too elusive to understand, too woowoo to trust, too whatever. These are the same people who gon smile up in your face when it’s done.
Not for me to walk with my radar on, but for my subconscios to register the fact, so it can do it for me, and instantly get me out of situations that don’t deserve me. As I lerned if I get late to a party it’s because I either actively chose not to attend(By denial or conscious direction, as the in between is passivity) or because it was never for me to go in the first place.
Where were you
when I was still becoming?
The truth is:
Our success strips people of their fear.
It becomes either
“teach me how”
or
“what can I get from you now?”
But when you’re intimidating,
when you’re sovereign,
people stop seeing you as someone to talk to,
and instead see you as someone to avoid.
✦ Fear Becomes Paint
So we learn.
To see fear in people’s eyes
and make art with it.
To put a smile on our pain,
to tint our glasses with the love of our craft—
because when we look outside too long,
we start to think we’re monsters.
But we’re not.
We’re blades—
sharpened by time,
refined by doubt,
forged in obscurity,
because the world will need us soon.
And even in compost,
the universe finds a way to live.
✦ Final Words
This post?
It’s a mirror.
A pink flame.
An ode to Elle.
A blueprint for the space I’m building,
and the world I see on its way.
You don’t need to win the case to be worth loving.
You don’t need the audience to believe to know you’re on the right path.
You just need to walk in.
With your dome intact.
And your truth—sharp, soft, whatever it needs to be.
They’ll catch up later.
And when they do?
Have mercy.
Or don’t.
Either way,
you’ll still be creating.
And if they do, after you’ve made clear of the unknown of that move, than maybe just maybe they have the same flame of courage that drives you, so honour those who will do.
Ashay,
—Susan Ndinga Wright
