March 2025 — The Garden Was Already There

One of the biggest misconceptions people have about vision is that it arrives fully formed.

Most of the time it doesn’t.

Most of the time it arrives as fragments.

Notes.

Lists.

Half-thoughts.

Ideas scribbled down between shifts, train rides, life events, responsibilities, and ordinary days.

Looking back at this note from March 2025, what surprises me isn’t what changed.

It’s what didn’t.

The note begins:

“Start with the garden before/while designing and full furnishing, to have food produce ready by the time we launch.”

Before the furniture.

Before the launch.

Before the aesthetics.

Before the public.

The garden.

Looking back, I realise this was never really about vegetables.

It was about foundations.

The understanding that the things which take longest to grow should be planted first.

The understanding that continuity must begin before visibility.

The understanding that roots matter more than ribbon cuttings.

The rest of the note follows the same pattern.

Reward the people who helped build it.

Invite artists in.

Create opportunities.

Create community.

Create places where people can meet each other.

Create ecosystems rather than audiences.

Looking at it now, I don’t see a business plan.

I see the early architecture of SHS and 4HONETH.

Not as companies.

Not as brands.

But as environments.

Places where people contribute, belong, create, grow, and find one another.

The funny thing about old notes is that they often reveal what was already there.

Years later, the names may change.

The designs may evolve.

The scale may expand.

The strategy may mature.

But the red thread remains.

This note reminds me that before there were visuals, scorecards, governance frameworks, letters, doctrines, structures, locations, and plans, there was already a simple instinct:

Plant the garden first.

The fruit will arrive when it’s ready.
