People often speak about consent as though it only exists when a form is signed, a contract is drafted, or a declaration is made.

But life is more interesting than that.

Every day people enter spaces.

They enter conversations.

They enter relationships.

They enter workplaces.

They enter communities.

They enter ideas.

And then they stay.

They participate.

They contribute.

They react.

They engage.

They enjoy.

They challenge.

They reveal.

They invest energy.

They leave traces of themselves behind.

That participation becomes part of the experience itself.

What fascinates me is that so many people willingly enter fields of interaction and then act surprised that interaction occurred.

They laugh.

They argue.

They teach.

They project.

They support.

They criticise.

They reveal their values, fears, preferences, assumptions, loyalties, contradictions, and beliefs.

In doing so, they become part of the environment they are helping create.

Part of the conversation.

Part of the observation.

Part of the story.

Part of the data.

No one needed to stop and say:

“I am now becoming a data point.”

Life had already begun.

The interaction was already happening.

The participation was already present.

The enjoyment was already present.

The engagement was already present.

The contribution was already present.

This is not about people being reduced to data.

Quite the opposite.

It is about recognising that every interaction leaves information behind.

Every exchange teaches something.

Every response reveals something.

Every presence contributes something.

The moment we enter a shared space, we begin affecting it and being affected by it.

That is the nature of participation.

That is the nature of community.

That is the nature of humanity itself.

So when I look at my work, I often see people helping build it without realising they are helping build it.

Not because they were forced.

Not because they were tricked.

Because they showed up.

Because they stayed.

Because they engaged.

Because they participated.

Because they brought themselves into the field.

Consent was given upon entry.

And reinforced through stay-cation.

The longer we stay in a shared reality, the more we become part of what that reality teaches.

The beautiful part is that this applies equally to everyone.

Including me.

I am not outside the observation.

I am also part of it.

I am also a data point.

I am also participating.

I am also revealing.

I am also contributing.

The difference is that I choose to make the process visible.

I choose to name the observation while it is happening.

I choose to show the research while I am conducting it.

And perhaps that is why it surprises people.

Not because observation is unusual.

But because most people participate in it unconsciously.

While I do it openly.
