People often talk about success as if it should look like a straight line.

Pick a destination.

Pick an industry.

Pick a ladder.

Climb it.

Simple.

At least on paper.

The reality is that very few people who create anything meaningful move in straight lines.

Most move through patterns.

Through layers.

Through adjacent experiences.

Through unexpected detours.

Through skills that appear unrelated until years later.

My own expansion was never linear.

It was oblique.

I never climbed one ladder.

I walked through many rooms.

Sales taught me people.

Hospitality taught me operations.

Conflict taught me accountability.

Homelessness taught me resilience.

Leadership taught me responsibility.

Writing taught me clarity.

Business taught me consequence.

Observation taught me patterns.

And each step informed the next.

The strange thing is that people often judge a step without seeing the staircase.

They see the restaurant.

Not the operations education.

They see the sales floor.

Not the psychology education.

They see the temporary position.

Not the permanent lesson.

They see movement sideways.

Not movement upward.

But expansion does not always look vertical while it is happening.

Sometimes the fastest route upward is sideways.

Sometimes the shortest route to mastery is through another discipline entirely.

Sometimes the lesson you need does not exist on the ladder you’re currently standing on.

So life moves you.

Not backwards.

Not off course.

Across.

The problem is that many people have been trained to mistake titles for growth.

If the title gets bigger, they assume growth occurred.

If the salary gets larger, they assume growth occurred.

If the status increases, they assume growth occurred.

Yet plenty of people climb ladders while remaining exactly the same person.

The title changed.

The person didn’t.

I became more interested in expanding the person.

Because titles can disappear.

Industries can collapse.

Markets can change.

Positions can be removed.

But the person remains.

And the person carries every lesson forward.

That is why I never viewed my career as a sequence of jobs.

I viewed it as a sequence of expansions.

Each role revealed a limitation.

Each limitation revealed a lesson.

Each lesson revealed a new direction.

Each direction revealed another room.

The route was rarely straight.

But it was coherent.

Looking backwards, the pattern becomes obvious.

Looking forwards, it rarely was.

That is the part people misunderstand about growth.

The only way up is through each step.

Not around them.

Not over them.

Not by pretending they are beneath you.

Through them.

Every lesson absorbed.

Every perspective expanded.

Every blind spot reduced.

Every responsibility understood.

Every consequence integrated.

The irony is that what appears to be a detour often becomes the very thing that qualifies you for the destination.

The step that looked sideways was actually upward all along.

You just couldn’t see the staircase yet.
