SHS Human First | The Journey to Parenthood Should Never Be Walked Alone.

What if supporting a pregnancy meant supporting the whole journey, not just the nine months in which it happens?

At SHS Human First, we recognise that bringing a child into the world is not an isolated event. It is a journey that begins long before conception, continues through pregnancy and birth, and extends into the first months of a child’s life.

And the people bringing that child into the world deserve support throughout that journey, too.

This is why we are developing SHS Pregnancy & Early Parenthood Support, an offering within our residences and services that brings together corporate doula support, practical assistance, emotional wellbeing and a supportive living environment.

From preparation to conception, through pregnancy and birth, and into the first six months of early parenthood, the intention is to create continuity of support when it matters most.

Five stages. One continuous journey.

🌱 01. Preparation & Readiness

Before the journey begins, there is room to prepare.

We support individuals in understanding their needs, establishing expectations, exploring their readiness and creating practical foundations for the journey ahead.

This includes conversations about lifestyle, routines, boundaries, emotional wellbeing and the support they may need along the way.

🌿 02. Conception & Fertility Support

Every journey to parenthood is different.

Where conception or fertility treatment forms part of that journey, SHS can help coordinate practical arrangements, provide emotional support and help individuals navigate the process with greater clarity.

Whether someone is preparing for conception or navigating a fertility pathway, they should not have to manage every practical and emotional demand alone.

🤰 03. Pregnancy Support

Pregnancy changes more than the body. It can affect daily routines, relationships, emotional wellbeing, living arrangements and the way someone experiences the world around them.

Our offering brings together practical and emotional support, assistance with daily living, wellbeing resources and coordination around medical appointments and care.

Through flexible check-ins and regular reviews, support can adapt as needs change rather than forcing the individual to fit a rigid schedule.

The aim is to help create an environment in which the expectant parent feels supported as a whole person.

🕊️ 04. Birth & Immediate Transition

Birth marks a transition, not the end of the journey.

SHS support can help with birth preferences, practical arrangements, coordination with relevant healthcare professionals and the agreed support surrounding the arrival of the baby.

The focus is on preparation, continuity and helping the parent navigate the transition into life with their newborn.

💛 05. Postpartum & Early Parenthood

What happens after birth matters.

The first six months bring their own practical demands, adjustments and questions. Parents may need help with daily living, emotional wellbeing, feeding support according to their preferences, household responsibilities and adapting to new routines.

SHS aims to extend support into this period, with the possibility of continued integration into the wider SHS community where appropriate.

Because welcoming a child into the world should not mean that the support surrounding the parent suddenly disappears.

Underneath the service is a different way of organising support.

The SHS approach is not simply about providing a list of services. It is about considering how those services work together around the person.

Our support framework brings together:

  • Flexible check-ins: Space for regular conversations about emotional wellbeing, practical needs and changing circumstances.
  • Open communication: An environment in which people can express their feelings, concerns, needs and challenges honestly.
  • Shared responsibility: A collaborative approach in which expectations are clear and support is coordinated.
  • Health and practical support: Assistance in navigating healthcare, illness, complications and everyday demands, alongside appropriate professional care.
  • Residential support: Where available and appropriate, access to a supportive environment, household assistance and resources that can make daily life more manageable.
  • Choice and individuality: Support that respects personal preferences, boundaries and the fact that no two pregnancy journeys are identical.

The service is intended to work alongside qualified healthcare professionals, not replace them. Medical decisions remain with the individual and their appropriate healthcare team.

Why bring this into SHS residences?

Because where people live and the support available to them are connected.

A residence can be more than a roof over someone’s head. Within the SHS Human First model, it can form part of a wider environment that brings together accommodation, practical resources, community and access to support.

For someone navigating pregnancy or early parenthood, that integrated approach creates an opportunity to organise assistance around the realities of everyday life, rather than expecting them to coordinate everything independently.

The corporate doula offering extends this thinking into the workplace and organisational environment, creating opportunities for businesses to consider how pregnancy and early parenthood support can form part of the way they look after their people.

The precise services, arrangements and eligibility will depend on the offering and the individual’s circumstances.

The journey does not end at six months.

Six months is the initial postpartum support horizon we are developing around, not a declaration that every parent will be ready to move on at that point.

Where appropriate, the next stage can involve transition planning, continued support or integration into the wider SHS community.

The broader principle is continuity: understanding what has changed, what is still needed and what comes next.

At SHS Human First, we are interested in what becomes possible when we stop treating life’s major transitions as isolated events and start designing support around the whole human experience.

From preparation to conception.
From pregnancy to birth.
From birth to early parenthood.
