And honestly?

Sometimes the people visibly falling apart aren’t the ones who scare me most.

At least you can see that something is wrong.

You can see the addiction.

You can see the homelessness.

You can see the intoxication.

You can see the crisis.

But what about everyone who looks completely “normal”?

The ones going to work.

Paying bills.

Smiling politely.

Sitting quietly.

Doing everything they’re supposed to do.

While internally they’re furious, exhausted, humiliated, disconnected, resentful, lonely, trapped or completely numb.

Because what happens when you build a society that rewards repression?

You don’t eliminate the anger.

You hide it.

You don’t eliminate the pain.

You teach people to disguise it.

You don’t eliminate despair.

You teach people to function through it.

And eventually people become incredibly good at looking fine.

That’s what we should be watching.

Not because every quiet person is secretly dangerous.

But because unprocessed human suffering does not disappear simply because it learned how to wear a suit.

The person on the pavement is visible.

The person silently breaking inside their house isn’t.

The drunk shouting in the street is visible.

The person quietly accumulating hatred for twenty years isn’t.

The person openly losing control is visible.

The person becoming completely emotionally detached while everyone calls them “successful” isn’t.

So perhaps the greatest danger isn’t always the person society has labelled dysfunctional.

Perhaps it’s the society producing millions of people who are expected to suppress everything until they can no longer feel themselves.

Because eventually something comes out.

Anger.

Violence.

Addiction.

Collapse.

Destruction.

Cruelty.

Or simply total emotional numbness.

What we repress doesn’t cease to exist.

It waits.

And that is why I am less interested in asking,

“What’s wrong with those people over there?”

and far more interested in asking:

“What are we creating in everyone who is still standing?”
