God’s Mafia Don’t Play Fair, Just Like Life Isn’t

Consciousness’s mafia would operate through what cannot be bought: truth, consequence, and the impossibility of hiding from what you are. If we imagine it as a metaphysical organisation, its territory would be existence itself.

No outsiders. No rival territory. Nowhere to flee that isn’t also within consciousness.

God would be the name whispered about at the head of the table—but the chair might be empty. Not because nobody is in charge, but because everyone has been looking for a person where there is an entire existence.

Its members would have unusual roles:

  • Awareness would be the lookout. It notices the contradiction before you have words for it.
  • Truth would keep the books. Intentions, actions, and effects entered separately. A beautiful explanation cannot alter what actually happened.
  • Consequence would collect. Not through revenge: through what an action sets in motion. Even the boss’s favourites couldn’t negotiate away an effect simply by disliking it.
  • Time would handle the long operations. Some things reveal themselves only after the performance has become too exhausting to maintain.
  • Love would run extraction. Getting you out could mean dismantling the arrangement you were desperately trying to preserve.
  • The Unknown would never attend the meetings. Yet every meeting would have to leave a place for it.

Their code would be: “You may deceive the room. You cannot make the deception become truth.”

And their most unsettling move? They wouldn’t need to threaten you. In this world, they could simply remove everything that helps you avoid seeing: the applause, the distraction, the flattering interpretation. Leave you alone with a clear understanding of your own participation.

But there’s an essential distinction: this wouldn’t mean every loss or painful experience was a punishment arranged from above. That would turn suffering into an accusation. Their business would be revelation, and revelation could arrive through tenderness, pleasure, curiosity, or someone finally asking the right question.

Their offer you couldn’t refuse would be existence itself. What you do with it would remain the whole conversation.
